New Appointments to the Committee
I am very pleased to be able to announce a number of new appointments as co-opted members of the UK 29er Committee.Junior Classes Liaison Officer - I would like to welcome Angie Alloway as our Co-opted Junior Classes Liaison Officer. This role will primarily focus on building relationships with our key feeder boats in the RYA Junior Classes Programme, namely the Cadet, Feva, Mirror, Optimist and Topper. This will involve two key activities; first offering advice and support to aspiring 29er sailors, advising them where there are meetings they can attend to try out the boat, meet current 29er sailors and introduce parents to current parents in the class so as to share experiences on the transition, understand the costs involved and get advice on boats and equipment etc. This will further include working with Nathan Batchelor at Ovington Boats to help identify where they new entrants can find a boat.Second, the role will involve organising actual promotional introductory sessions at both 29er events and at Junior Class events. To this end we already have two such sessions planned, one at the first 29er Grand Prix event of the season at Rutland at the end of March, and the second at the Topper Inlands at Grafham at the start of May. These sessions will provide potential new entrants with the opportunity of meeting current sailors and parents, along with potentially having trial sails (weather permitting). We will also seek to create a database of potential new helms and crews, with contact details and location / sailing clubs so we can work to introduce prospective helms and crews, and ultimately track how effective we are at bringing new sailors into the class.
